The Marine Discovery Centre in Henley Beach is opening its doors to the public for an afternoon of aquatic delights and fun education. A range of interactive experiences will engage visitors with the wonders of marine life and the importance of looking after our environment.

A guided and self-discovery opportunity to explore the many features of the centre, including:

* Aquariums featuring local South Australian marine creatures such as the Port Jackson Shark, Pot-Bellied Seahorses, Southern Fiddler Ray, Porcupine Fish, Murray River Turtle and more

* Virtual Reality Headsets giving you the opportunity to explore under the sea without getting wet. Underwater virtual reality experiences include Australian Sea Lions, Leafy Seadragons filmed in Rapid Bay, and swimming under the Henley Beach Jetty.

* Kaurna education Room (The Wodli) is an interactive room that highlights the relationship that Kaurna people have with the Adelaide Plains and the coast.

* Interactive models featuring oceanography, climate change, marine debris, marine habitats, touchscreens, sustainable fishing, stormwater, beachcombing, and get hands-on with our microscopes.

The tour will conclude with a guided Marine Trail with our Marine Scientists on Henley Beach from 11.30am

Every week is a tailor made new experience.

I’ve always had a fascination with water, particularly the ocean and I’m sure a lot of you have too. I’ve always seemed to be drawn to it as it gives me a sense of calm and often inspires me. Lately, I’ve started to question why.

Thanks to a partnership with the Port Environment Centre, Cultural Educator, Karno Martin is sharing the stories of traditional tools used by the Kaurna people. The tools are a beautiful collection of items that have been made using traditional materials and methods.

These tools are currently held at the Marine Discovery Centre for the community to experience and learn from. Book in for an excursion or join us for our next Open Day.

The Marine Discovery Centre in Henley Beach is opening its doors to the public on this World Environment Day. A range of interactive experiences will engage visitors with the wonders of marine life and the importance of looking after our environment.

Education is the best way to ensure that the community will do their bit to protect biodiversity not just on this international environment-focused day, but every day. As it happens, we happen to have several resources available that can help with this.

Hands-on excursions really bring units of work to life for students.

Our team at the Marine Discovery Centre hope to connect you and your students with the marine world through our interactive excursions and classroom activities. Learning experiences at the MDC are facilitated by qualifies marine scientists and a cultural educator.

The Marine Discovery Centre is closely aligned with ACARA (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority) particularly the cross-curriculum priorities of Sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.

*Bookings are essential. Minimum class charge of 15 students (60 max).

My journey: forging a career in marine science

It’s halfway through year 10, and the school advisor is nagging a 15-year old Nathan about career aspirations and subject selection for years 11 & 12. How annoying! Doesn’t this silly person know that entering the work force is literally years away, and all that really matters right now is maintaining my popularity and catching the eye of my high school crush?

Follow my journey from a high school student who loved recreational fishing, to being a confused undergraduate university student with no career aspirations, to getting my doctorate in marine ecology and becoming a marine ecologist for COOE, an environmental consultancy based in Adelaide. Along the way we will review the decisions and experiences on this journey, laugh at the naivety of teenage Nathan, and explore some of the career pathways stemming from a marine science degree.
