Marine Discovery Centre at Science Alive!

Earlier this month, the Marine Discovery Centre was delighted to be a part of the Science Alive! event at the Adelaide Showgrounds for the first time ever. Thousands of visitors attended the event from Friday 6 - Sunday 8 November.

It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of the wonders of the Marine Discovery Centre with the community. With thanks to our staff and volunteers we were able to share a selection of marine wildlife specimens, a collection of shells and their scientific names, virtual reality headsets showing a number of 360 degree underwater experiences, and a hands-on experience in our Marine Habitat model which allowed visitors to explore different habitats including the rocky shore, the sandy shore and intertidal zone between high tide and low tide.

We are delighted to be able to return to hosting events at the Marine Discovery Centre. Covid-safe practices are strictly adhered to and event numbers are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. We look forward to returning to our monthly Open Days and regular school holiday programs from 2021.

Kids Marine Scientist Club

The Kids Marine Scientist Club was finally able to commence (mostly) in Term 4. Thanks to the support of SA Water, the club has provided a number of experiences for children on Thursday afternoons. The Club will be returning in 2021.

So far our little marine scientists have

  • Gone beachcombing on Henley Beach with our qualified marine scientists learning the scientific names of the treasures they find on the beach
  • Fed the marine wildlife located within the Marine Discovery Centre
  • Learned about the human impact on our marine environments and made art out of recycled trash
  • Made twine from Bulrush Reed and were provided a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture and their sustainable ways

Aboriginal Symbols poster.png

Create Aboriginal symbols at home

Symbols play an important part in telling Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, preserving Aboriginal culture and tradition. Many use lines and dots to record stories of cultural significance, teaching survival and use of the land.

The MDC's Cultural Educator and resident artist, has hand drawn a poster of some of the symbols used.

A great activity to do in the classroom, at home, the beach or your local park is to try and recreate some of the symbols. You can use sand or other beach materials like seaweed, shells or pebbles.
